Rebel Rebel Flower School, Tuscany  |  Next date 14th May 2018

Following our success with evening workshops in Hackney and our classes in Beijing in China we have decided to open our school during the summer in our favourite part of Italy, far from the madding crowds, in the mountains just a winding single track train ride from the beautiful walled city of Lucca in Tuscany.

Our house is in a small hamlet near Barga, a medieval hillside town, in the middle of the wide valley of the River Serchio.  The area is called the Garfagnana, a protected area of natural beauty.

This spring we planted a cutting garden and we’ll forage in the fields and woods nearby.  Our natural style of flower-arranging will benefit from the native flora and the flowers that we buy from the commercial market at San Remo. Italian summer flowers include peonies, roses, sweet peas, snapdragons, stocks, all our favourites.

Itinerary

The Summer School is over four days, during which you will create our signature Bouquet on Legs, learn to wire elaborate flower crowns and perfect buttonholes, work as a team on a large installation, and decorate our garden – the focus of the last night feast – with flowers, feathers, branches and lights.  We want our students to find the way into their own floral style with our expert help.  Plus pizza.  Plus aperitivi.

There is a break day in between for you to explore the beautiful surroundings or relax and enjoy the tranquility.

Sunday

You will arrive at your home for the next week, Col di Lavacchio: a working organic farm and agriturismo. You will discover its olive grove,

vineyard, wild flower meadow, orchard and woodland, yoga deck, 12m swimming pool and gorgeous views across the valley.

In the evening there will be welcome drinks and dinner in the farmhouse.

Monday

Day One - Lavacchio

A walk through the surrounding countryside, choosing grasses, herbs and foliage for the afternoon floral exercise, looking at their robust

strength or delicate fragility and their place in a bouquet or vase arrangement. A brief talk on flower longevity and their conditioning and

treatment.

In the afternoon we’ll use our foraged ingredients as well as local flowers from Italy and our own cutting garden to create our signature

‘Bouquet on Legs’. You will learn the techniques of hand tied bouquets.

We all spend the evening together, making pizza with help from our in house chef.

Tuesday

Day Two – Lavacchio and Filecchio

After yesterday’s supersizing, today is all about intricate, delicate wirework and careful construction.

In the morning we will travel to a nearby hilltop villa overlooking the Serchio valley. Sitting on the terrazza we’ll wire individual flowers,

leaves, fruits and feathers, and learn to make beautifully intricate wired pieces.

Back at the farmhouse, the afternoon is quintessentially English, learning the art of making a ‘Constance Spry’ vase.

In the evening you will be taken up to beautiful Old Barga. We will recommend our favourite restaurants. (dinner not included).

Wednesday

Day Three – Day off to explore

Today you are free to explore the stunning local area or take a trip to the beautiful medieval walled city of Lucca just 45 minutes by train.

We provide transport to and from the station. And we can recommend restaurants and bars for lunch and drinks.

Florence and Pisa are also a reasonable day trip – up to you.

Thursday

Day Four – Mologno

Welcome to the Rebel house. This is our own house in the valley and we’ll spend the whole day here creating an installation as a team. Lots of

preparatory work, conditioning flowers and foliage so that they are fully watered and ready for a day of snipping, pushing and wiring them into

place to create a beautiful floral masterpiece.

In the evening there will be a 3 course dinner at Lavacchio (included).

Friday

Day Five – Lavacchio

Using our wiring skills from earlier in the week, we will let our creativity run wild, spending the morning creating flower crowns and buttonholes

for the evening ‘sagra’.

In the afternoon we will be decorating for our own Sagra. In the Garfagnana most villages have their own particular local produce and one

weekend every summer they celebrate it by having a party. Traditionally held in a field or piazza, grandmothers, toddlers and everyone in

between come out to eat and drink and dance. We will dress the garden and our table on the sun deck for the final evening’s feast.

We will then sit down to celebrate the week with a fabulous feast and wine!
