Rebel Rebel is opening a floral Summer School in Tuscany, Italy.  Following our success with evening workshops in Hackney and our classes in Beijing in China we have decided to open our school during the summer in our favourite part of Italy, far from the madding crowds, in the mountains just a winding single track train ride from the beautiful walled city of Lucca in Tuscany.

Our house is in a small hamlet near Barga, a medieval hillside town, in the middle of the wide valley of the River Serchio.  The area is called the Garfagnana, a protected area of natural beauty.

This spring we are planting a cutting garden and we’ll forage in the fields and woods nearby.  Our natural style of flower-arranging will benefit from the native flora and the flowers that we buy from the commercial market at San Remo. Italian summer flowers include peonies, roses, sweet peas, snapdragons, stocks, all our favourites.

The Summer School is over four days during which you will create our signature Bouquet on Legs, learn to wire elaborate flower crowns and perfect buttonholes, work as a team on a large installation, and decorate our garden – the focus of the last night feast – with flowers, feathers, branches and lights.  We want our students to find the way into their own floral style with our expert help.  Plus pizza.  Plus aperitivi.

We think you’d prefer to choose your own place to stay so we are recommending a few that we like – to suit all pockets.  You can stay just a walk from our house or at the top of a mountain, in a five star hotel or in a tent.  It’s up to you.  And while you are in the neighbourhood why not stay for a few more days and explore Lucca, the spa town of Bagni di Lucca, go out to the coast to the Cinque Terre or Via Reggio, or up into Michelangelo’s marble source, the mountains of Carrara.
